ALABAMA

FORTIFIED Discounts - Alabama homeowners can earn steep discounts by installing a FORTIFIED Roof or building a FORTIFIED home. Savings range from 20-55% off the wind portion of the property owner's insurance. The discounts are statewide with different premium discounts available for coastal and inland homeowners.

Additionally, Alabama provides commercial property owners statewide a discount on insurance rates for building using the FORTIFIED Commerical standard.


Grant program, Strengthen Alabama Homes - Provides grants up to $10,000 to owners of existing homes to upgrade them to the FORTIFIED standard. No income limits or tests. Open to all residents with primary residence in Alabama. Learn More


FORTIFIED Roof endorsement - Many insurers now offer homeowners an endorsement to their homeowners insurance policies, which upgrades their home to an IBHS FORTIFIED Roof if it is damaged and needs to be replaced. Learn more

The Retrofit Tax Deduction provides Alabama residents an opportunity to get a tax break when mitigating their homes or businesses. Upgrade to resist flood damage and using FORTIFIED construction standards can qualify. Homeowners can deduct up to $3,000 or 50% of the cost of the work, whichever is less on their State taxes. Here is the language from the 2019 Alabama Form 40 Booklet (Page 16). Consult a tax advisor or the Alabama Department of Revenue for more information.

Alabama Assistance to Individuals and Households(IHP) provides information about Alabama's FEMA based support for individuals and families in the wake of a Presidentially declared disaster. Through this program, homeowners can find assistance through temporary housing, home repair, and home replacement.


Catastrophe Savings Accounts can be set up at any bank and must be labeled for use as a catastrophe savings account by the account owner (not the bank).




CONNECTICUT

Opening Protection insurance discounts - Connecticut law requires insurers to provide premium discounts to homeowners who show their insurer proof of installation of permanent storm shutters or impact-resistant glass on their dwelling to mitigate loss from hurricanes or other severe storms.

The Connecticut Individual Assistance: Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides information on Connecticut’s FEMA based support program, which offers assistance in temporary housing, home repairs, and other essential needs.


Florida

Florida Administrative Code requires insurance companies in Florida to offer premium discounts for residential properties that installed fixtures or used construction techniques that have been demonstrated to reduce windstorm loss.


The Florida Wind Insurance Savings Calculator can help to calculate insurance savings based on home features, planned upgrades, or added mitigation measures.


Florida’s Hurricane Loss Mitigation Program offers the Hurricane Loss Mitigation Retrofit Grant for residential, commercial, and mobile home properties. The grant funds retrofits, inspections, and construction or modification of building components that are designed to increase the ability of a structure to withstand flooding and hurricane-force winds.


The Florida Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program can provide financing for up to 100% of the costs for resiliency efforts made to residential or commercial property. Property owners repay the financing for the PACE improvements through a special assessment which is added to their property tax bill each year of an agreed-upon term.
