Understanding yours is the first step toward protecting your home, your family, and your finances.

The map below shows general high wind, hurricane, and hail risk across the United States. FORTIFIED standards are designed specifically around the weather risks in your area, so the level of protection that matters most depends on where you live.

Wind and Hurricane

Homeowners along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic seaboard face significant hurricane and high-wind risk. In coastal states, wind insurance is often a separate policy from homeowners insurance. FORTIFIED Home standards are specifically designed to reduce wind-driven damage and qualify homeowners for insurance discounts of 20% to 55% in states with enacted legislation.

Hail

Hail damage is one of the most common and costly insurance claims in the country, concentrated in the central and southern United States. A hail supplement is available as part of the FORTIFIED designation process for markets with elevated hail risk.

Flood

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States, and it can happen anywhere it rains. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Nearly 30% of flood insurance claims come from outside high-risk flood zones. Learn more about flood insurance.

Wildfire

Wildfire risk is expanding rapidly across the West and into new regions. The IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home standard provides a science-based framework for homeowners in wildfire-prone states to reduce their risk, document it, and qualify for insurance discounts.

What can I do about my risk?

Building or re-roofing to FORTIFIED standards is the most effective step most homeowners can take to reduce storm damage and lower insurance costs. Use the Incentives and Resource Map to find grant programs, insurance discounts, and other resources available in your state.
