Thank you for supporting our mission. We believe in transparency and partnership. In the spirit of both, we are providing this privacy statement to let you know where and when we collect your digital data and how we use it. Learn more about us here.

Collecting Data - We collect data that you may provide us, as well as data that is provided to us automatically through your web browser. We use this information to provide you with services, such as our email newsletter, or to understand the general trends of how visitors interact with our website, newsletter or social media.

  • Website - We are a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. Our website, smarthomeamerica.org, is free to use for the general public. We do not use paid advertising on our website. It is a service to provide information about how to make your home, business, or community more resilient, mitigate risks from natural hazards, and how to better understand insurance and become properly insured.
    • We use Google Analytics to understand how people are interacting with our website and what items they are looking at. This helps us improve our content and resources.
    • We have a Google AdWords account linked to Google Analytics, allowing us to understand more information about visitors to our website if you choose to share this information with Google. We can see generalized and aggregated information about our visitors, including demographics, general interests, and location (to the city level).
    • Cookies - Our website, like many others, uses cookies to help us understand how people use our site. You can disable or delete cookies in your web browser.
    • “Do Not Track” - We honor “do not track” signals
    • Links - Our website contains links to other sites. We strive to link to only reputable and trusted sources of information. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of other sites or organizations.
    • The information on our website is provided for information purposes only and should not be considered legal advice. We strive to provide current and accurate data but at times errors or omissions may occur.
  • Newsletter - We send out regular updates by email using the MailChimp platform. MailChimp makes it easy to create email newsletters and manage our email list in one place. Online, at a minimum, an email address is required to sign-up to receive our newsletters. You may opt to provide your name as well. We also collect contact information in-person at events we host and through our day to day interactions. You may sign up for emails on our website, smarthomeamerica.org, or through our Facebook page, Facebook.com/BuildResilient or by contacting us.
    • Unsubscribe - You may unsubscribe from our email newsletter and marketing at any time.
    • You may update your preferences or information at any time once you subscribe. This link is at the bottom of every email we send through MailChimp.
    • MailChimp reporting allows us to understand which newsletter subscribers open our emails, how many times they open them, which links they click on and the general, aggregated locations of the subscribers who open our emails (to the State level).
  • Social Media - We have a presence on social media, namely Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube. We do not monetize our social media accounts, meaning we don't accept paid advertising on our accounts. We use a social media management tool, Sprout Social, to help us manage our social media and understand how our social media posts perform and how people interact with our content. We can see generalized information about how many people clicked on or read posts, when people interacted with the posts and who shared our content or followed/liked us. We also use the built-in functionality and analytics of these social media platforms to better understand our followers and improve our content and information delivery.
    • You may follow or unfollow us, like or unlike us at any time through your social media accounts.
    • At times we may place paid advertisements on social media. These ads typically run for a set period of time and allow us to choose who we’d like to see our promotions in a general sense. For instance, we can choose to show ads to people in specific locations or with specific interests, based on selections provided by the social media platform.

Using Data - We use the data we collect to provide you information through our email newsletter (if you choose) and to understand how people interact with our website, newsletter, social media accounts and resources. We do not sell or share your data.

  • The only time we will share any personally identifiable data is if ordered to by law.
  • We keep data on the platforms you sign up for or use. If you sign-up for our newsletter, your contact information is stored there. If you visit our website, data about how you use our site is aggregated with the data of all other visitors via Google Analytics. If you follow or like us on social media, your data is aggregated with the data of all other fans or followers on those platforms and accessed either through the platform itself or via our social media management software.
  • We use Google Analytics and MailChimp Reporting to understand how people are interacting with our website and newsletter and what items/resources they are looking at. Through these tools, we can also see generalized and aggregated information about visitors, including location, and learn how we can improve our online content and resources.

Who We Share Data With - We do not share your data with third parties nor do we sell data. If you sign up for our newsletter, your information goes into our MailChimp database unless you ask us to delete it.
